Don’t look now, they’re building Eurovegas just outside Madrid!
It has been well documented that the economic downturn in Europe has hit particularly hard in Spain. So it is no wonder that one of the largest and most outlandish investment projects of the last 10 years is set just outside Madrid: a whole new urban entertainment space with a name that says it all: Eurovegas.
Spearheaded by one of the wealthiest people in the world, arch-conservative casino and media magnate Sheldon Adelson, the project calls for 6 casinos, 12 hotels, a convention center, 3 golf courses, bars, restaurants, shopping centers – all at a total cost of 35 billion dollars (27 billion euros). With its location in the Madrid suburb of Alcorcón, government officials are suspending rules on construction height, zoning, and taxes, all as part of the effort to get the project. Developers promise tens of thousands of new jobs, which is a big selling point for a region and country plagued by unemployment. The only catch, when it comes to work, is that it seems labor regulations about wages and preventing the recruiting of guest workers may also be suspended as part of the deal.
The draft images are futuristic and sometimes tacky, depicting a mini Las Vegas strip with a touch of New York’s Times Square and a hint of Dubai-style flashy architecture. Construction is slated to begin at the end of this year and be completed by 2017, though that doesn’t take into account the tradition of going over budget and falling behind schedule that will inevitably occur. Beyond the cool pictures and the stated benefits, critics are now left wondering about the real economic, cultural, and environmental impact a Euro-Vegas would have on residents of the greater Madrid area. All this in a country where corruption and economic injustice have been among the top 3 most cited concerns for the average citizen for several years now.
That being said, if you happen to be a fan of wacky architecture and futurism, you’ll probably enjoy these and future images of Eurovegas!
