UA Podcast: South Park, Satire, and Society

UA Podcast: South Park, Satire, and Society

In its 16th year on the air, South Park has been celebrated and demonized by people throughout the world. Their unapologetic head-on approach to addressing the issues of the day using humor has led to them being one of the most watched and trusted sources for news and current events analysis.

Brian Dunphy is a lecturer at Brooklyn College who over the years has taught classes on South Park and Satire, breaking down the program and how it intersects with the American psyche and the rest of the media ecosystem. More recently he has been lecturing in various European cities on this very topic as well as the role of the Daily Show as a news source. Today on the program we listen to highlights from his 2012 talk at Nijmegen University in the Netherlands.

“What they’ve given us is reality. What they have given us is a reality that is more real than I’ve seen on television in a really long time. A reality that represents America more accurately.” – Brian Dunphy on South Park’s gifts.
